Prince Deese, an All American Wrestler, a Hall of Fame Football Player, and a State Champion Body Builder, is a certified personal trainer and strength conditioning specialist. Prince Deese and Gina Deese own A.C.T. by Deese, a Fitness & Training Center in Greensboro, NC.

His name is James Whittaker…better known as “Oscar” to close friends and associates. Two years ago, at 69 years of age, he was diagnosed with diabetes. He was told by his physician that without some change in his situation, he was facing a potential leg amputation.

With extreme edema in his ankle and unable to walk on a treadmill for more than 20 seconds at a time, Oscar brought his concerns and fears to Prince Deese at ACT by Deese, a fitness club in Quaker Village. He began an exercise regimen designed specifically to address his problem.

Today Oscar has lost 24 pounds, exercises six days a week, and no longer wears compression nor has swollen ankles. Oscar has received remarkably positive reports from both his cardiac physician and internist.

Oscar will tell you that his experience has been “life changing,” that the results of his efforts have given him back a more normal and healthy lifestyle. He attributes his dedicated motivation to the social atmosphere in the exercise center, to having a personal trainer who keeps him on track, to the friends he has made at the gym, and to the education and knowledge about wellness which he learned from his fitness trainer. Oscar can now be seen walking on the treadmill for 45 minutes, taking multiple fitness classes and resistance weight training.

Facts surrounding diabetes in the United States are shocking. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations, blindness in seniors, high blood pressure and is the seventh leading cause of death. Up to 70 percent of diabetics suffer damage to the nervous system, and the risk of stroke is two to four times higher in those suffering from diabetes.

The list could be extended to less serious but nonetheless life-handicapping conditions such as blurred vision, extreme fatigue, unmanageable weight loss, urinating problems, and more.

Cheers and applause go to Oscar Whittaker for attacking his problem with a dedication that brought results. Oscar’s trainer at A.C.T. by Deese on Dolly Madison Avenue in Greensboro is proud to recognize Oscar’s continued participation and determination as he uses exercise to fight his dreaded diabetes symptoms.
