Bermuda Village - Logo“What’s next?” “What can I do?” After mulling over these questions, a group of Bermuda Village residents began to search for answers. After studying, discussing and exploring, a Fun Wellness College for residents was the unequivocal answer.

The college’s purpose is to encourage an active pursuit of a sharper mind and stronger body. Residents select their respective level of participation, and best of all: this college is free!

The professors are mentors who assume leadership roles to explain what Bermuda Village’s Fun College is all about. They help set goals for exercise, diet, social activities, music and new learning, individually tailored to what each person can reasonably accomplish.

For example, some residents have started tracking their walking distances, both inside and outdoors. Classes have been held on world religions, planets, backyard birds, the micro-world, nuclear accidents, bird migration, weather forecasting, the universe, music therapy, the Bible and current events. Strength training, aerobics, aquatic exercises, and creativity classes are also available. Safety is emphasized through discussions, lectures, and handouts.

The monthly schedule of programs complement Bermuda Village’s established activities and lifefit programs. A recent Music Month encouraged therapeutic use of music throughout the community. It began with the nationally recognized ALIVE INSIDE program on music therapy, followed by a performance by the College Chorus and a music / dance performance by the Village Tappers.

Positive anecdotal results of the college-themed program are encouraging. Residents are exercising more, participating in more scheduled events, and following through to reach goals. While it is difficult to measure acts of kindness, participants in the buddy system are enjoying the social contact and a new peace of mind.

Understanding the value and rewards from continual learning, Bermuda Village also helped to organize Wake Forest University’s Lifelong Learning Program. Transportation to class is provided without charge.

Bermuda Village, a full-scale retirement community within the gated Bermuda Run Country Club, is unique in not requiring a large entry fee which are typically nonrefundable. Instead, it offers home ownership that provides flexibility and also allows residents to maintain equity in their property with varying levels of supportive care.
