Most of us wait entirely too long to make moving and downsizing decisions while not considering all of the positive aspects. There are actually many. And, if you try to make it a positive change while you are better able, it simply will be. Fear will subside, because the time you invest now, in preparation for your future, will pay off by making the change go more smoothly for everyone involved.

Timing is everything. Why wait until you are forced to make a quick decision after a fall, a medical emergency or the loss of a spouse. Such events can throw you into an overwhelming dilemma, unprepared or unable to make the best decisions for yourself or your family. Take time now to look around; get educated on all the options that are available.

Change may be more affordable than you think. Most of us have more possessions than we need, and it may be costing us more money to store them than they are worth. If you simply downsize or move to a smaller home, choose an independent living community or to a continuing care retirement community.

You can subtract or reorganize some of your current expenses. Here are a few:

• Lower mortgage or a mortgage which includes amenities
• No homeowners insurance or taxes on your property
• Lower utility rates, reduced repair and maintenance costs
• No expenditures for landscaping, snow or tree removal

Discuss this with a financial advisor. It may be more beneficial than you think.

Think about downsizing sooner than later. Downsizing is like taking a ton of responsibility off your shoulders. There’s less to worry about, fix or clean. Less is more. As difficult as it may be, consider selling or consigning unneeded furniture, dishes, knick-knacks, and collections. Give your family now the things you would will to them later, or donate to a charity or non-profit.

When you move, you’ll have less clutter; you’ll be more organized. Most communities offer meals. Great! No need for dishes! No more time spent cooking, cleaning, planning, shopping, spending, and it could be safer for you.

There are always the positive social aspects of living in a community. Safety is first. More security and comfort come with less isolation. You will also make new friends who may encourage you to spend more time on yourself, exercising, engaging in more activities, and ultimately enjoying a different kind of freedom.
