Art museums were uncommon 75 years ago when Gregory Ivy opened the Weatherspoon on the Woman’s College campus. It was the first art museum in the UNC system and second in the state, following the opening of Charlotte’s Mint Museum in 1936. Today it is a hidden gem in the art world with one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary art in the Southeast by national and internationally known artists.

A special feature in this issue is the Independent Living Community, a perfect option for seniors who want to remain comfortably independent without the burden of home maintenance. The style of home can vary from single family residences and cottages to apartments in hotel resort-style settings. The nine communities in this issue offer a wide array of activities as well as amenities comparable to living in a fine resort.

Senior Services has launched a new program in Forsyth County, Aging with Purpose. Based on what the Eden Alternative calls “the three plagues of the human spirit” (loneliness, helplessness, and boredom), it devises new ways to reconnect seniors with their community. As part of the new initiative, 150 seniors are being interviewed through a Living History Program.
