A warning to all seniors!! Do not ignore your insomnia and sleeplessness.

Regular restful sleep is critical to good health, and is a significant part of the body’s system for healing and repairing the heart and blood vessels. Without sufficient restful sleep, the body is subject to health risks such as heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. Sleep contributes to the brain functions involved in learning, making decisions, being creative, controlling emotions, resolving depression, and dealing with daily stress. Sleep plays a part in determining the reaction time for safety and controlling emotional stability during the challenges of daily life. When sleep patterns are erratic, good health conditions are endangered. Sleep deprivation has a negative effect on mood and energy levels, contributes to aches and pains, and can cause swelling of the brain that often results in irreversible damage. Do not ignore your insomnia and sleeplessness.

Exercise is known to promote restful sleep and reduce the conditions which insomnia creates. The “aftermath” or “cooling down” period following exercise is known to produce a quieting effect on the body which encourages a state of relaxation. But, excessive “work-outs” or “over-exercise” has a reverse impact on sleep deprivation programs. herefore, it’s important to establish a reasonably timed regimen in the early or middle part of the day…….and at least three hours or more prior to bedtime. A simple walk or brief cycling routine will reduce conditions that cause sleep disorders, but needs to be practiced with regularity in order for the benefits to be effective.

Do not ignore symptoms of insomnia. The impact can be far-reaching and serious. Act now to take the steps necessary to correct bad sleeping habits before major problems occur.

  1. warm bath before retiring
  2. turn off TV an hour before bedtime
  3. avoid afternoon naps
  4. avoid drinking alcohol in the late evening
  5. get some sunshine during the day
  6. get help to manage the stress of aging problems such as:  financial difficulties, illness, death of loved ones, etc.
  7. stay active in retirement
  8. establish a regular exercise program with reasonable limits that are adapted to your personal needs

While there are drugs and medications that will help address sleeping problems, it may be more desirable to first address your insomnia naturally – through a healthy exercise program and routine management of activities that are designed to promote healthy rest and sleep time.
