The Triangle and Triad offer many wonderful winter time pursuits from dinner and a show at DPAC in Durham or the Steven Tanger Performing Arts Center in Greensboro to Playmakers in Chapel Hill or the Milton Rhodes Center for the Performing Arts in Winston-Salem. The great out-of-doors beckons as well with snow-skiing to the west or great winter-time hikes locally. Big trips out west for skiing or to Mexico or the Caribbean to catch some warmth are fun winter pursuits as well but the quick getaway, the mini-vacation, still reigns supreme when you live in a wonderful state like North Carolina. The North Carolina beaches are magical in wintertime with low hotel rates and easy access to great restaurants. Who doesn’t love a winter walk on the beach? An overnight to Asheville or Blowing Rock to shop and engage in the art scene is equally alluring.

This issue, we focus on a mini-vacation you might not even realize exists. Nearly 200 wineries call North Carolina home from the coast to the mountains. Most offer wine tastings and some offer entertainment to make a day’s adventure worthwhile. But a few offer overnight accommodations on the vineyard’s grounds. These can range from glamping to fully equipped personal cabins for you and friend to enjoy a totally immersive wine experience that is close at hand, relatively inexpensive and totally out of the ordinary.

North Carolina is simply the best place in the US to retire … we have four distinct seasons, easy access to beaches and mountains, a widely varied list of arts and cultural events, and great restaurants, breweries, and wineries. You truly can have the retirement of your dreams in North Carolina.
